HORRIBLE : Democrats in the Senate Defeat Amendment Protecting Babies That Survive an Abortion
ETN - Senate Democrats on Thursday defeated an amendment that might have allowed for criminal and civil penalties for doctors who fail to supply health look after a baby who survives an abortion. Needing 60 votes to be placed within the budget resolution, the amendment by Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) received 52 votes. a complete of 48 senators – all Democrats – opposed the amendment.
The amendment would have required that doctors provides a baby who survives an abortion an equivalent health care as the other baby that age. Specifically, the amendment would have allowed for the “creation of criminal and civil penalties” for “providers who fail to exercise an equivalent degree of look after babies who survive an abortion or attempted abortion as would be provided to a different child born at an equivalent fetal age .”
Sasse, during a brief speech on the Senate floor, presented it as a bipartisan amendment. within the end, though, it received support from only two Democrats: Sens. Joe Manchin (W.Va.) and Bob Casey (Pa.). the 2 recently elected Democrats from Georgia - Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff – opposed it. All 50 Republicans voted for it.
Sasse called it a “pretty simple” issue.
“Every baby, whether she is born within a state of the art hospital within an NICU unit, or whether she is born during a n abortion clinic in a strip mall – every baby is born with dignity, and is made in God's image,” Sasse said. “And she deserves care. This amendment is aimed toward ensuring that babies who survive abortions get an equivalent degree of care that the other newborn would. There's nothing partisan about that .”
Sasse added, “There's tons of complicated debates during this chamber but this is not actually one among them. Here's an opportunity for 100 senators to return together and support every baby. Every baby deserves a fighting chance.”
The pro-life Susan B. Anthony List applauded Sasse and criticized senators who opposed the amendment.
“Requiring medical aid for newborn infants should not be up for debate,” Susan B. Anthony List said during a tweet. “... If you cannot even vote to guard born-alive infants, you've got no business claiming you value unity or justice.”
U.S. Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) tweeted, “Senate Democrats voted to deny medical aid for a baby born ALIVE after a botched abortion. this is not healthcare, this is often infanticide. It’s chilling.”
